Embodied carbon includes all greenhouse gas emissions tied to the production, transport, and installation of building materials. Unlike operational emissions, which can be improved post-occupancy, embodied carbon is locked in from day one. 

In most hotel and commercial buildings, concrete and steel contribute over 80% of total embodied emissions. Addressing this early is where the real impact lies. 

We’ve implemented targeted material substitutions across multiple projects, including the Sofitel Moroni in Comoros. These strategies delivered both emissions reduction and direct cost savings: 

• Portland Slag Cement (45% GGBS)
  Reduced concrete-related emissions by up to 36% 

• Recycled steel from certified producers
  Lowered steel emissions by up to 79% 

• Regional sourcing
  Cut transportation-related carbon and reduced supply chain risk 

Combining low-carbon cement with recycled steel, we achieved a 46% cut in embodied carbon and brought material costs down by nearly 12%.
